WHy is it useful?
Probably because not only do the industrial world enjoy its benefits but also the artistic, food packaging and medical world. Styrofoam sheets are used for insulation which is placed below the concrete stopping the freezing and melting of the soil, preventing the surface from breaking. The process can be also used in the making of the base of a construction or a building. Styrofoam is used in the architecture world as a type of tiny draft model, by doing so they are able to plan their work to perfection and not risk having to make a very pricey mistake. In the medical and pharmaceutical world it is used to create disposable equipment such as syringes and many more. Without these disposable equipment many people would be in high risks of an infection or a disease especially if not all equipment is cleaned properly. Which would come in handy to third world countries who can't afford stainless-steel medical equipment. Anothere reason would be that Polystyrene gets the job done, the food safety benefits of polystyrene are unrivaled. The United State Food and drug Administration has approved of polystyrene packaging since 1958. Not only that but tests have proven disposable polystyrene containers are more sanitary than the reusable containers. It's also much more economical to produce a polystyrene cup, you only need 50% less the energy you would need to create a similar product ( not polystyrene material ).
If any of these Polystyrene products were never to exist the industrial, architect, medical and pharmaceutical worlds would have to struggle until they find an alternative that can fulfill that role just as good.
